Corona-Virus:
Operation of air conditioning and ventilation systems

Status August 3, 2020 – The fear of the coronavirus and the lung disease COVID-19, is great. Since the virus is absorbed via the respiratory tract and can spread via droplet infection and possibly via the air, air conditioning and ventilation systems are also suspected of transmitting the virus. According to expert opinion, however, the spread via ventilation and air-conditioning systems is unlikely.

According to the RKI, the current situation is as follows: "Since COVID-19 is an infection that is primarily spread via droplets (and not primarily transmitted via air), it cannot be assumed, based on the current state of knowledge, that a further spread of SARS-CoV-2 via operated ventilation systems (for example
in public buildings, hotels) takes place" (Source: CCI Dialogue on 16 March 2020)

Against the background of the current corona pandemic, operators of air handling systems are confronted with questions regarding the handling of the systems, some of which have not yet been clarified. The associations FGK, AHU manufacturers' association and BTGA summarise the current recommendations in an information paper and pass them on the basis of the current state of knowledge.

Association Information of the VDMA, Allgemeine Lufttechnik

The companies of VDMA's General Air Technology Division (Allgemeine Lufttechnik) are working at full speed on current topics in the era of COVID-19. As a result, the Air Filters Working Group of the Air Conditioning and Ventilation Technology Department has produced the information paper "Operation and Use of Ventilation Systems in the Age of COVID-19", which provides information on the most important aspects for minimising the spread of the new virus via air conditioning systems. The content of the document is largely based on the "REHVA COVID-19 Guide", a publication of the European association REHVA.
